The Finished Film

Here is, HS2: A White Elephant

The Finished Products

The Newspaper Ad:

We had chosen this design as we feel it reflects the HS2 and the documentary in numerous ways. I also feel like the red colour works well with the background as it makes it more appealing to our audience and also more like a channel 4 Ad too. The Red colour can also be pointing towards danger, and could be a slight way of portraying mine and Dan's views on the HS2, Maybe.

The Double Page Spread

Now as you may have just seen the previous designs to the other double page spreads, this one is completely different. We decided we needed to go with something more professional and subtle to go along with the codes and conventions . As you can see we have used the similar pictures, and also it is pretty much the same text, But we have just made it less conspicuous. Overall i am really happy with this design and i hope it could maybe one day in a RadioTimes Magazine, because it looks exactly like it.

6.3 Making the Print Artefacts

The making of the Print Artefacts

The Newspaper Ad

When making the newspaper ad i did it using a few effects in Microsoft word. Now i know that doesnt sound too technical but the results i think can speak differently. As you know i made 3 different designs which show in different ways the documentary and HS2. I had made a design for all of them and we are yet to choose which one we want to hand in to mark.  (Ignore the writing) This is what i like about each of them:

This represents what the channel 4 documentary adverts look like so it fits the profile of the advert. Also, it’s also very basic and easy to understand and not too cluttered. Also, there is not much dead space as the train picture takes up most of it.
I like this design because it’s not as boring as the other design, not as formal. It’s because I think the blue defiantly helps the poster stand out more to a wider much younger audience, which can make it easy to remember. Also, the graffiti also makes an appearance which can also represents other people’s opinions in the poster. I’ve also used a lighter font so that it could be easier to read and understand. But it is still part of the channel 4 font pack.

This design focuses more on the environmental issues that people and the HS2 have to deal with. Also, when taking this shot when filming for the documentary I thought that loads of plant life is going to be destroyed to make way for the hs2. So, I wanted to capture quite a lot of footage like this to get that information across to the audience. I’ve also started expanding the colour scheme of the channel 4 logo and the title box. I’ve also kept the font white as I feel that it stands out more within the red colour scheme.

The Double Page Spread

When making the Double page spread, i started by using something other than Microsoft word. I had a look on the schools computer to see if i could find a program which has designing double page spreads in mind. After a bit i had found a program called Adobe InDesign. InDesign i found was a great program to use, although at first i had to watch a few YouTube videos to get to grips with it. I Started by making a basic draft, which was just to get used to all of the feature and experiment.

Next i started the Double page spread and came up with this first proper draft:

i had based it off of the national rail sign, and was pretty happy with the final design:

But overall we had to dismiss this design as me and Dan felt that it wasnt in line with the conventions of  RadioTimes magazine.

6.2 Examples of Print Artefacts

Print Artefact examples

The Newspaper Ad

From this poster from channel 4 you can almost tell immediately what the documentary is going to be about. Because can see that the title is “Disarming Britain” and the boys hand gesture is resembling a gun and from just those two pointers you know what the documentary is about. This is exactly what I would want from my documentary poster, for it to instantly tell the audience what it’s going to be about. But the only trouble this could have is that no one will know what the HS2 is, so we would have to use different titles or slogans to remind the viewer or tell the viewer what the HS2 is.

This Poster Ad shows what the documentary is in a very intelligent way. As the title is “Britain’s Forgotten Children” It shows in a number of different posters children sinking into the floor as people walk by unnoticed. This represents the title pf the whole documentary. This I think is a key feature in and documentary telling the audience what it’s about, but not directly and that’s what’s good about it. So for example I will need to explain what the documentary in the poster but make it subtle so that they don’t figure it all out straight away or they won’t watch the documentary.

This poster is very unique compared to the others as it only focuses on one picture in particular as the others has a series of scenarios going on in the pictures. So in this one you have to really try hard to know what the poster is trying to tell you. Also it uses a close up shot so you can clearly see the people’s faces in the poster. The poster focuses on two people and also that the documentary may follow their lives in the next week.

The Double Page Spread

Now we didnt quite look at as many newspaper articles as we should have as we were running low on time, however while we did look at one example on the internet, Picture below, we did buy the magazine that we were focusing on, RadioTimes. This allowed us to get a first hand look at the magazine and to also get an upto date on too.

But first the one from the internet.

This double page spread would work well for our audience as our audience is young they would want less to read andf more to look at. This article has one nig picture and less text to compensate for its audience, this is one code and convention form Radiotimes that we are looking at to implement in our own double page spread.
Also the Text at the top ( The Title) is in big bold font which could easily attract a large audiemnce to the title, this also hits two birds with one stone as this is also good for a completely different audience who are visualally impared.

The text itself is more like an interview and not a review, something that we are looking to do in our double page spread. However we still need review as we are wanted our audience to see the good review and go and watch the documentary.

This is from the double page spread that we bought and studied.

This article is an interview with the stars from the last leg, This follows the codes and conventions of the RadioTimes, This is also very similar to our own project and the only major difference is that this is not based on a documentary, but it does resemble the topic that our documentary, politics. This is why we think that this is a good example to follow and have as a baseline for the making of our own double page spread.
The first code and convention that we have noticed is like the last RadioTimes is the large title that introduces to the audience what he article is about and at the same time it doesn't, as it doesn't use a direct title for what the article is on. But unlike the last double page spread this contains more writing and if we had this amount of writing it may turn our audience members off as they could get bored.

Also what is classed as a code and convention on the RadioTimes Magazine double page spread is the pictures and linking them to other articles and topics. As you can see from the first image in the bottom left corner you can see an image that partially links with the articles topic, but it also tells readers information about other articles and in some cases get buy the next issue. This is an idea that we could use for our own double page spread, and for an example we could even promote our other "Made up" parts of the documentary.

Overall i'd say this is a very good example of a RadioTimes magazine, and it feels like something we should aim for in our own designing of our double page spread.
