The Newspaper Ad

From this poster from channel 4 you can almost tell
immediately what the documentary is going to be about. Because can see that the
title is “Disarming Britain” and the boys hand gesture is resembling a gun and
from just those two pointers you know what the documentary is about. This is
exactly what I would want from my documentary poster, for it to instantly tell
the audience what it’s going to be about. But the only trouble this could have
is that no one will know what the HS2 is, so we would have to use different
titles or slogans to remind the viewer or tell the viewer what the HS2 is.

This Poster Ad shows what the documentary is in a very intelligent
way. As the title is “Britain’s Forgotten Children” It shows in a number of
different posters children sinking into the floor as people walk by unnoticed.
This represents the title pf the whole documentary. This I think is a key
feature in and documentary telling the audience what it’s about, but not
directly and that’s what’s good about it. So for example I will need to explain
what the documentary in the poster but make it subtle so that they don’t figure
it all out straight away or they won’t watch the documentary.

This poster is very unique compared to the others as it only
focuses on one picture in particular as the others has a series of scenarios
going on in the pictures. So in this one you have to really try hard to know
what the poster is trying to tell you. Also it uses a close up shot so you can
clearly see the people’s faces in the poster. The poster focuses on two people
and also that the documentary may follow their lives in the next week.
The Double Page Spread
Now we didnt quite look at as many newspaper articles as we should have as we were running low on time, however while we did look at one example on the internet, Picture below, we did buy the magazine that we were focusing on, RadioTimes. This allowed us to get a first hand look at the magazine and to also get an upto date on too.
But first the one from the internet.

This double page spread would work well for our audience as
our audience is young they would want less to read andf more to look at. This
article has one nig picture and less text to compensate for its audience, this
is one code and convention form Radiotimes that we are looking at to implement in
our own double page spread.
Also the Text at the top ( The Title) is in big bold font
which could easily attract a large audiemnce to the title, this also hits two
birds with one stone as this is also good for a completely different audience
who are visualally impared.
The text itself is more like an interview and not a review,
something that we are looking to do in our double page spread. However we still
need review as we are wanted our audience to see the good review and go and
watch the documentary.

This is from the double page spread that we bought and studied.
This article is an interview with the stars from the last leg, This follows the codes and conventions of the RadioTimes, This is also very similar to our own project and the only major difference is that this is not based on a documentary, but it does resemble the topic that our documentary, politics. This is why we think that this is a good example to follow and have as a baseline for the making of our own double page spread.
The first code and convention that we have noticed is like the last RadioTimes is the large title that introduces to the audience what he article is about and at the same time it doesn't, as it doesn't use a direct title for what the article is on. But unlike the last double page spread this contains more writing and if we had this amount of writing it may turn our audience members off as they could get bored.
Also what is classed as a code and convention on the RadioTimes Magazine double page spread is the pictures and linking them to other articles and topics. As you can see from the first image in the bottom left corner you can see an image that partially links with the articles topic, but it also tells readers information about other articles and in some cases get buy the next issue. This is an idea that we could use for our own double page spread, and for an example we could even promote our other "Made up" parts of the documentary.
Overall i'd say this is a very good example of a RadioTimes magazine, and it feels like something we should aim for in our own designing of our double page spread.
