6.2 Examples of Print Artefacts

Print Artefact examples

The Newspaper Ad

From this poster from channel 4 you can almost tell immediately what the documentary is going to be about. Because can see that the title is “Disarming Britain” and the boys hand gesture is resembling a gun and from just those two pointers you know what the documentary is about. This is exactly what I would want from my documentary poster, for it to instantly tell the audience what it’s going to be about. But the only trouble this could have is that no one will know what the HS2 is, so we would have to use different titles or slogans to remind the viewer or tell the viewer what the HS2 is.

This Poster Ad shows what the documentary is in a very intelligent way. As the title is “Britain’s Forgotten Children” It shows in a number of different posters children sinking into the floor as people walk by unnoticed. This represents the title pf the whole documentary. This I think is a key feature in and documentary telling the audience what it’s about, but not directly and that’s what’s good about it. So for example I will need to explain what the documentary in the poster but make it subtle so that they don’t figure it all out straight away or they won’t watch the documentary.

This poster is very unique compared to the others as it only focuses on one picture in particular as the others has a series of scenarios going on in the pictures. So in this one you have to really try hard to know what the poster is trying to tell you. Also it uses a close up shot so you can clearly see the people’s faces in the poster. The poster focuses on two people and also that the documentary may follow their lives in the next week.

The Double Page Spread

Now we didnt quite look at as many newspaper articles as we should have as we were running low on time, however while we did look at one example on the internet, Picture below, we did buy the magazine that we were focusing on, RadioTimes. This allowed us to get a first hand look at the magazine and to also get an upto date on too.

But first the one from the internet.

This double page spread would work well for our audience as our audience is young they would want less to read andf more to look at. This article has one nig picture and less text to compensate for its audience, this is one code and convention form Radiotimes that we are looking at to implement in our own double page spread.
Also the Text at the top ( The Title) is in big bold font which could easily attract a large audiemnce to the title, this also hits two birds with one stone as this is also good for a completely different audience who are visualally impared.

The text itself is more like an interview and not a review, something that we are looking to do in our double page spread. However we still need review as we are wanted our audience to see the good review and go and watch the documentary.

This is from the double page spread that we bought and studied.

This article is an interview with the stars from the last leg, This follows the codes and conventions of the RadioTimes, This is also very similar to our own project and the only major difference is that this is not based on a documentary, but it does resemble the topic that our documentary, politics. This is why we think that this is a good example to follow and have as a baseline for the making of our own double page spread.
The first code and convention that we have noticed is like the last RadioTimes is the large title that introduces to the audience what he article is about and at the same time it doesn't, as it doesn't use a direct title for what the article is on. But unlike the last double page spread this contains more writing and if we had this amount of writing it may turn our audience members off as they could get bored.

Also what is classed as a code and convention on the RadioTimes Magazine double page spread is the pictures and linking them to other articles and topics. As you can see from the first image in the bottom left corner you can see an image that partially links with the articles topic, but it also tells readers information about other articles and in some cases get buy the next issue. This is an idea that we could use for our own double page spread, and for an example we could even promote our other "Made up" parts of the documentary.

Overall i'd say this is a very good example of a RadioTimes magazine, and it feels like something we should aim for in our own designing of our double page spread.

6.1 Print Artefact Designs Draft 1

Print Artefacts - First Drafts

Before making any sort of start on the print artefacts we needed to plan and make up some mock designs of what they would look like, so we know where to get all 20 marks for both of the print artefacts.

The Newspaper Advertisement

 The First Draft

In this design I have used a train which will explain to the audience through the poster of what the documentary is about.
The train will defiantly be the big speaking point of the poster so when I actually design it I would like to try and blur the background out to make sure that people focus on the train so they don’t get the wrong idea of what the documentary is about.

For the titles I would likely use “Channel 4 Chadwick Bold” (Which is unavailable on School computers) but it makes the font easier to read and helps all of our target audiences to understand the Ad. Also I would have the titles in a white box and the text to be a black colour.

The Second Draft

In this Ad I have planned to use the sign of the local town I live in and also because that the majority of the documentary is filmed in the Tamworth area. Although the only bad thing is that people won’t necessarily associate Tamworth with the HS2 as Hardly anyone knows Tamworth exists. So maybe i could use something in Tamworth where people might link back to the HS2.

The Third Draft

This ad I feel represents the Hs2 for the most reasons people are against it. As 100s of acres of countryside is being demolished. So, this is a good representation of what most people know the HS2 is going to do, even though it doesn’t have the train in it, I feel that the audience will look at this and still know the effects the HS2 will have.

The Double Page Spread

Here are the Original Drafts for the double page spread design:

This was the orginal planning and design, it had tamworth train station as the background and a review in the top corner. But that is as far as it got.

This was the second draft of the double page spread. The background focuses on the national rail sign, with the red and white colours. I liked this one a lot when i was designing it. But after a review of the finished product below me and Dan both felt that it really didnt fit the codes and conventions of the magazine that we had alreday researched and planned for. Although we did keep some of the content for it like the interview we had in the magazine articles, but in the final product we had a few changes.

5.5 Progress Part 3 ( The Interview )

Progress Part 3

The Interview

Here is the final Progress check on the Editing of the video footage. This part is the interview we had with MP Christoper Pincher. This is the footage that has been edited down to what we have used in the documentary, with a few minutes of bonus footage as well.

5.4 Progress Part 2 ( The Route Graphic )

Progress Part 2

The Route Graphic

This part focuses on the route graphic, and how after around 4-5 hours of editing (5 lessons) the route graphic was made. I mainly used adobe premiere pro to fix this up and i used a YouTube tutorial to help get to grips with the skills needed to create this i mainly used the write on effect and crop to make it look like a real moving map.

5.3 Progress Part 1 ( Title Sequence )

Progress Part 1

 The Title Sequence

This is the first of many progress video that will go up on this blog. This shows the progress of how far in the film we have edited, by showing clips of scenes that have been complete.

This will be starting with the title sequence. Now as you may have seen in our First reveal to our audience we showed a basic title sequence and what i have embedded is a much better, more expanded version of that intro.

5.2 Editing / Effects and Technical Skills

Editing

Editing is a big part of making the film. It where everything mixes together, the planning the filming all comes together and you have to make the best possible edit the with ingredients you have.
In editing we have used a number of effects to help the Documentary fit its codes and conventions better and to also look like a real documentary.

What we did ( In a Nutshell )

After importing the footage from the camera, we created 9 sequences for each scene. After this, we cropped each shot down. We then imported the voice-over and split up into the different scene using the razor tool or the cropping tool on Adobe Premiere Pro. After putting the split up voice-over into the relevant sequences, we started to put the shots in the corresponding places to match up with the voice-over. We also matched the shots up, by using the storyboard to guide us. In some of the shot compositions, we added cross dissolves to add a bit more creative flair to our sequence. Once we finished putting all the shots in place, we found we had gaps in the scenes. In order to combat these gaps, we created text graphics on Adobe After Effects.

The Technical Skills used

Colour correction: This effect is more of a visual effect as it can help to make the shots look better and if the weather was slightly different on the days of filming, colour correction is a great way to make all the shots consistent. We used colour correction

Cross Dissolves : By far this is our favourite transition to use as it is so clean and look good. This transition is also a great code. The cross dissolve is also an important effect as if your effect is too wild and a bit out there, it wont match your target audience, for example the spiral effect wont work with our target audience as they would be put off instantly. It also wouldn't work with the type of documentary we are doing as it is a pretty serious topic and a political topic, and using that effect, the audience might think we are poking fun at the topic, which we are not.

Exponential fades: An Exponential fade is an effect used to slightly lower the volume of a sound in a clip, or sound file itself. We used it in a transition from clip to clip. Because we have Dan doing the voice over for the documentary we need to try and balance the sound from the voiceover and the clips that have sound in, for example a clip with a train in would need a exponential fade to be able to hear Dan's voice and be able to go quite enough before the next clip is played in the sequence. In the whole editing process, the effect is key and it does take several times to perfect as you always need to for back and tweak the sound, as maybe the voice over can be to quite or the clip to loud. So its always best if you have this effect to go back and watch it as many times as you can.

Route Graphic

The route graphic was a large part of the documentary and trying to make it took around 5 lessons. The idea came about as we were planning and looking at other A2 documentaries and we came across a documentary explain different parts of the uk and a map showed up, and it clicked. So then we looked at the map of where the HS2 is going around the uk and tried to replicate that as a plan. Then the hard part came about, actually making it. To know where to start I researched a couple of YouTube videos on how to make a route graphic , and surprisingly a view came up.

Animations

The Animations were a sort of thing we added in during the editing process. We thought it need needed to be more in tune to a channel 4 documentary . We started by finding what we could make into an animation. We decided that basic facts about the HS2 would be the easiest to animate and this could make it easier for the audience to visualise the facts. We decided on, the price of the HS2 to be a fact/animation. This would show the audience how many zeros it will cost, Maybe it might shock them. Then we also decided on the different towns the HS2 will pass through to be on there so the audience can know if there not good at hearing. Sort of like subtitles. For the animations we used word effects on Adobe after affects and then once we had finished we exported them into adobe premiere pro to then have a place in our film.

Evaluations + Green screen

Now green screens we have used before, so we felt quite comfortable when it came to editing the footage. The green screen we are going to use for 1 of our evaluation questions, we have yet to decide which one we are going to use. However we know that when editing a piece of film that has been record in front of a green screen, you are going to need an effect called "Chroma Key" this effect allows you to put whatever you what on the green screen. We feel that for our evaluation, we are going to put whatever we are talking about at the time on the green screen. This could consist of a certain piece of equipment, in which we could have a photo of it behind whoever is talking.

5.1 From Camera to Computer Screen

From Camera to Computer Screen

To get the footage from the camera to the computer, you need a special piece of equipment called an SD reader. With this you can put the SD card from the camera into the reader then it can be connected to the computer and from there the footage can be uploaded to the computer and the editing progress can begin.
